The owner of the brand — Tierras de Armenia company possesses 2300 ha of land in Ararat plain (Armavir Region), 450 ha of them are occupied by the vineyards. The vineyards were planted in several steps, since 2003. In 2016 100 ha of vineyards gave first harvest (planted in 2012). The altitude is 1000-1100 m above the sea level. The climate is dry with hot summers and cold winters. The vineyards are drip irrigated. They bury the vines to protect them from winter frosts. A special hail-protecting nets are used as the necessity here. The soils are poor, dominated with loam and volcanic components.
The vineyard is one of the few which is phylloxera resistant due to the special rootstocks. The main white varieties: Kangun, Chardonnay, Muscat Ottonel, Viognier, Chenin Blanc, Colomberd, Foile Blanche and Sauvignon Blanc. The red varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Tannat, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Montepulciano.
The grapes are crushed by modern pneumatic presses Bucher Vaslin. The fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with temperature control. The addition of extra plots of the vineyards led to corresponding changes in the winery as well. A new section was added to the existing vine processing equipments. In the future Karas Wines will be able to process up to 2500 tons of grapes during the season and produce about 1 million bottles per year. The wine is aged in French, Armenian and Karabakh oak barrels.
The project belongs to a native Argentine businessman Eduardo Eurnekian. The Argentine team supervises the whole cycle. The wine production process during the whole year is monitored by a young winemaker Gabriel Rogel. The head consultant of the project is the mayor of worldwide oenology Michel Rollan. He personally arrives to the winery and forms the complex blends several times a year. In the beginning Vahe Keushguerian consulted the project.
